I did something I don't normally do and read a book from a series without having read the previous books. It is the first of Scalzi's sci-fi novels written intentionally as young adult fiction. Although Scalzi revisits the plot of his last novel, his youthful narrator has her own heart-touching and exciting adventures. Zoe's Tale, the fourth book in John Scalzi's OLD MAN'S WAR series, is the same story we were told in book three, The Last Colony, except it's from Zoe's perspective. A friend told me recently that her boyfriend was sick of sleeping with her. Zoe's Tale retells the events of Last Colony from the perspective of Zoe, the teenage daughter of Last Colony's protagonist. John Scalzi's a hell of a writer and a hell of a smartass, and Zoe's Tale, his debut young adult novel, features one of the most likable, most smart-assy protagonists I've ever had the pleasure of sharing 330 pages with. This is the fourth book in John Scalzi's Science Fiction series that started with Old Man's War. What drove me nuts about this book was how perky it was.
